A Stranger's Birthday

Some how I found myself at a thirty-first birthday party for a freelance editor I didn't know. (My friend worked as his assistant on some anti-smoking PSA's.) The party was an interesting assortment of acting hopefuls, would be producers, and production assistant script peddlers, about average for a Hollywood shindig of this sort. At least that's what I'm told. While my friend shook hands with possible employers and fake smiles I did the predictable thing and went strait for the food.

While on the patio eating some Sate and drinking a perverse interpretation of a screwdriver, I noticed a girl in a short black dress standing alone by the railing. She seemed vaguely disinterested in the party in general so I instantly had a small degree of respect for her. Not having received the appropriate amount of alcohol I decided to ask my friend if he knew her rather than build up the nerve to just go up and start a conversation with her. He had no idea who she was and started talking to some friend of his so I hit the bar.
Upon returning I saw the black dress girl standing next to my friend and another girl, looking as disinterested as ever. I soon found out that "“Stacy" (Not her real name) moved to LA a year ago, was at the party with her roommate, and works at a major record label. Now I had a three-hour debate the day before at work about the RIAA and their stance on music file sharing and the impending lawsuits that were to come from it. Call me a geek, I find that stuff interesting. So I asked her what her stance was about the RIAA's position and whether or not it is in the artists' best interest to allow their music to be shared on the internet. Suddenly this woman who looked like she'd rather be at a funeral came to life. We must have talked for about an hour just on file sharing alone. (Yes I know I'm a geek, you don't need to send an e-mail telling me how I am a super geek or how you or a friend is better or worse.)
Several hours (and drinks) later we were on the couch talking about the Mega Man series for Nintendo. (Don't ask me how we shifted gears to that of all topics) As we were in mid conversation her friend came up and told her it was time to go. It took me a little by surprise so I didn't know how to ask for her number. We both said it was nice meeting each and ended in a handshake. Normally I'd be more bummed but my roommate has her roommate's number and is always willing to help. (Even though I'll have to deal with his sarcasm until the end of time. If I actually got together with this girl he says I'd owe him sex with a girl since he introduced me.)
